The Gill v. Department of Children and Families
A landmark legal battle over queer adoption rights. Martin Gill, a gay man from Miami, challenged Florida's 1977 law that banned gay people from adopting children. Gill and his partner had been foster parents to two young boys since 2004, and they sought to adopt them permanently but faced constant legal hurdles along the way.
In 2010, the court ruled in favor of Gill,
declaring Florida's ban on queer adoptions
The ruling highlighted that the law served no legitimate state interest and discriminated against LGBTQ+ individuals.
This decision effectively ended Florida's 33-year ban on gay adoption, making it one of the biggest legal victories for LGBTQ+ rights in the state.
