Brenner v. Scott - Marriage Equality
Fast forward to 2014, Florida had a bit of a legal
wake-up call
when a same-sex couple, married in Canada, only to find out their state
didn't recognize their marriage.
Enter Brenner v. Scott
A U.S. district court took one look at Florida’s same-sex marriage ban and decided it needed a serious update . On January 6, 2015, Florida became the 36th state to legalize same-sex marriage, thanks to Judge Robert Hinkle’s ruling that the ban was unconstitutional. After a brief pause, the state was told to recognize all marriages, no matter where they happened. And just like that, love won—Floridian style. Welcome to the future y’all.
